Lumbar disc operations have been performed since 1934 and belong to the most frequent operations carried out in general medical care. However, the techniques for treatment have advanced considerably and it is nowadays standard practice that this operation is performed microsurgically. From a small incision in the back the spinal canal is exposed, the disc herniation is removed and the disc space is cleared of degenerated material. If necessary, bony decompression can be performed at the same time during the procedure. The operation is done under general anaesthesia and the clinic stay is between 3 and 5 days.
