I perform this technique in cases of spinal stenoses. In contrast to the common operation with a broad laminectomy and fusion, I take a microsurgical approach to each affected segment. I only remove bony and ligamentous impinging structures and leave the dorsal elements of the spine in place. Thus maximum of stability is preserved and normally there is no need for fusion. The tailored resection of each segment, which needs treatment is done by working with a microscope and because of this may need up to five hours operating time.
This operation is, due to its minimal trauma, also possible in older patients as well. If necessary, post-operative intensive care is available at any time. The length of stay depends on the number of segments treated and ranges from 3-7 days. The recovery period is usually 4-6 weeks.
